Film Sensors for Home Appliances

A Force Sensing Resistor (FSR), also referred to as a force sensor, is a specialized resistive component whose electrical resistance decreases as applied force increases. The sensor is typically constructed using a polymer-based sheet or printed ink layer containing both conductive and non-conductive particles. When force is exerted on the sensing surface, these particles come into contact with conductive electrodes, resulting in a measurable change in resistance.

Force Sensing Resistor (FSR) Overview

A Force Sensing Resistor (FSR), also referred to as a force sensor, is a specialized resistive component whose electrical resistance decreases as applied force increases. The sensor is typically constructed using a polymer-based sheet or printed ink layer containing both conductive and non-conductive particles. When force is exerted on the sensing surface, these particles come into contact with conductive electrodes, resulting in a measurable change in resistance.

Compared to other resistive sensor technologies, FSRs perform reliably in demanding environments and require relatively simple interfacing electronics. Key advantages include their slim profile (under 0.5 mm), low cost, and strong shock resistance. However, FSRs are not suitable for precision measurement applications—typical accuracy is around ±10% or more. Therefore, they are not used in weighing systems but are ideal for detecting force presence or relative changes in pressure.

Applications of Force Sensing Resistors

FSRs are widely used across various industries, including:

– Motion analysis systems

– Automotive sensors

– Resistive touch panels

– Medical devices (e.g., patient monitoring beds)

– Musical instruments

– Industrial measurement systems
